DID YOUR RESUME FALL INTO THE BLACK HOLE OR GET PITCHED INTO THE ROUND FILE AND SHREDDED?
Have you ever answered a job ad by sending your resume either by snail or email and never received even the slightest response? Have you ever wondered if something was wrong with your resume? As a professional recruiter who reviews hundreds of resumes , I can share with you my experience and how to avoid the same dry holes. Here are five points that irritate recruiters:
1. Resumes are never cast in stone. For some reason, there is the myth that a resume is complete after written. This should never be the mind set that the resume is cast in stone. Some feel that a professional writer makes it perfect, therefore, there is no need to make changes.
2. Most employers display job advertisements which contain detail description of the job, requirements for the job and requirements/skills to qualify. In today’s climate, recruiters and hiring managers are looking for that person who meets all the requirements and bring solid demonstrated experience. It is important that you apply to positions with your specified skills, requirements and experience.
3. It always amazing to see resumes with misspelled words. Most computers are equipped with a spell check of some kind. Some computers even have automatic spell checks. This unfortunate mistake indicates a lack of attention to detail. I recommend that you read and reread and then have some else read for spelling errors or missing words or incorrect language. Check spelling before sending.
4. I get very irritated when a resume provides no chronology of jobs and time on the position or at the company. This maybe a personal preference, but the question will come up by either an HR manager or the hiring manager, how long was he/she in the function? Provide some or all chronology.
5. Resumes which lack discussion of achievements tend to give an impression of a non performing person or a person who brings nothing to the table. This impression may not be true. The only way to make a positive impact is write the resume showing and discussing the greatest accomplishments that you have experienced on the job.
